JAC Welcomes TPS Designation for Ethiopia

More Action Needed to Protect Black Migrants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopia. Below is a statement from Laura Flores, Skadden Fellow at Justice Action Center:

“Today’s DHS designation of TPS for Ethiopia is welcome news for the 30,000 Ethiopians currently in the U.S. who will be able to work and contribute to communities without fear of deportation for the next 18 months.

“This victory is thanks to the fierce leadership of advocates and organizations like the Ethiopian Community Development Council who have been calling for TPS and humanitarian aid for Ethiopia for more than a year amid armed conflict and food shortages.

“But TPS is only a band-aid fix. We must follow the leadership of Black immigrant advocates calling for holistic and permanent solutions to protect people seeking safety and freedom.”
