14 States and District of Columbia File Amicus Brief Supporting Haitian Plaintiffs in HBA v. Biden

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Fourteen states and the District of Columbia have filed an amicus brief in support of the plaintiffs in Haitian Bridge Alliance v. Biden, a federal class action lawsuit that seeks justice for the more than 15,000 Haitian asylum seekers abused in Del Rio, Texas in September 2021.

The following is a statement by the HBA v. Biden legal team, which includes Haitian Bridge Alliance, Justice Action Center, and Innovation Law Lab, with pro bono co-counsel Covington & Burling LLP:

“We welcome the amicus brief filed by the District of Columbia and 14 states in support of plaintiffs in Haitian Bridge Alliance v. Biden. In addition to emphasizing the invaluable contributions immigrants make to their communities, amici also underscore the United States’ commitment to treat asylum seekers humanely while affording them the opportunity  to seek safety—a legal obligation that the U.S. government flouted in its treatment of Haitian asylum seekers in Del Rio last year. We join these amici in urging the Court to deny the Biden Administration’s motion to dismiss.”
