WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Supreme Court issued its much-anticipated ruling today in Trump v. Barbara, rejecting the Trump Administration’s attempt to end birthright citizenship through executive order.
Karen Tumlin, Founder and Director of Justice Action Center, issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision makes clear what should never have been in question: presidents do not get to rewrite the Constitution or decide which babies count as American. Birthright citizenship is a cornerstone of equal citizenship, rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment and affirmed for generations.
“This ruling is an important rebuke of the administration’s attempt to narrow belonging by executive order. But the fight is far from over. We know this attack is part of a broader effort to make immigrant communities less secure, less protected, and less able to build their futures here.
“The promise of birthright citizenship was born after slavery, out of Black Americans’ ongoing fight for full and equal citizenship. As our country approaches its 250th anniversary, we must recommit ourselves to that promise – and reject every attempt to make some people’s citizenship less secure or less equal than others.”
