Biden Kowtows to Extremists with Deadly Executive Order Further Decimating Asylum

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, President Biden issued an executive order that would allow him to summarily deport people seeking safety.  Below is a statement from Karen Tumlin, founder and director at Justice Action Center:

“Today’s announcement from the Biden Administration is a devastating move that would accomplish nothing except to further endanger the lives of people seeking safety. This executive order marks a damning shift for President Biden on border policy that embraces extremist scapegoating of people fleeing danger and further encourages anti-immigrant rhetoric and violence, in a futile attempt to score political points.

“The decision to issue this policy that would summarily deport people back to deadly conditions will fail on several levels: it is cruel and ineffective, unlawful, and is an open attack by the Administration on people seeking safety.

“Instead of fear mongering, President Biden should expand his own programs that do work, such as humanitarian parole. In addition, the Administration must engage with direct service organizations, directly impacted people, and the communities at the border who have been doing welcoming work for years in the absence of governmental action.

“Being able to access legal protection when fleeing persecution should not be subject to an arbitrary cap based on the number of people suffering and seeking refuge at our doors on a given week. All people deserve a chance at safety. Unless his Administration reverses course, President Biden will have blood on his hands.”
