Trump Administration’s Cruel and Reckless Plans to Revoke the Legal Status of CHNV Humanitarian Parole Beneficiaries Will Inflict Harm Upon Communities Nationwide

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C.— CBS reported today that the Trump administration is preparing to revoke the lawful status of humanitarian parole beneficiaries from the program that includes Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (also known as “CHNV humanitarian parole”). Here is a statement from Karen Tumlin, Founder and Director of Justice Action Center:

President Trump’s plans to revoke the lawful status of CHNV humanitarian parole beneficiaries is an unprecedented, cruel, and reckless decision—the first of its kind in the 70+ year history of the parole authority since its inception in the aftermath of WWII.

For both beneficiaries and their American sponsors, the CHNV humanitarian parole program has proven to be wildly popular and successful, garnering the support of more than 1.5 million Americans who applied to exercise their freedom to welcome—their ability to welcome family members, friends, and other global neighbors into their hearts, homes, and communities.

The programs rely on the financial support of these everyday Americans for the two-year duration of beneficiaries’ stay in the U.S., reuniting families and offering safety from life-threatening persecution. These sponsorships have also allowed Americans to support beneficiaries’ ability to feely practice their faith, contribute to the economy, and fulfill crucial labor shortages.

Let’s be clear: The harm the President seeks to inflict with this move will ripple throughout the country—tearing apart families, households, and communities. With partners, we successfully defended the CHNV parole programs before a Trump-appointed judge in federal court. JAC will not hesitate to defend this critical program in court once again.
